How this work is different

Much of the support available for children today focuses on responding once problems appear.

The Groundwork takes a different approach.

Instead of waiting until children are struggling, the focus is on building strong foundations early - helping children understand their bodies, recognise their emotions and develop the skills that support regulation, confidence and resilience.

These are life skills that shape how children handle challenges, relationships and learning as they grow.

Learning through experience

Many of the most important skills children develop do not come from instruction alone.

They grow through experience.

Climbing trees.

Solving problems together.

Exploring the world around them.

Taking small risks and learning what they are capable of.

Experiences like these help children build confidence, independence and self-trust in ways that are difficult to teach inside four walls.

That is why time outside and real-world exploration are an important part of The Groundwork.

A work in progress

The Groundwork is still evolving.

New programmes are being developed, partnerships are forming and ideas continue to grow as more schools, families and community members become involved.

Like the name suggests, this work is about building foundations.

And foundations take time.

A shared effort

Although The Groundwork was created by Anna, the vision has always been bigger than one person.

Schools, families, businesses and community supporters all play a role in helping children access the experiences and skills that support their wellbeing.

Because when communities invest in children early, the impact reaches far beyond childhood.

Looking ahead

The long-term vision for The Groundwork is simple:

To help raise a generation of children who understand themselves, feel connected to the world around them and have the internal tools to navigate whatever life brings.
