Relationships Are Mirrors

The people we meet don't just become part of our story.

They help us understand it.

Some people are in our lives for decades, others for a surprisingly short time, but how long someone stays isn't always a measure of how much they shape us.

A relationship can change the way we see ourselves, show us what we need, strengthen a boundary, challenge an old pattern or teach us what we want to carry into the relationships that come next.

A different way to see it

It’s easy to look back at a relationship and think mostly about the other person-what they did, what they didn’t do, where they hurt us, supported us, stayed, left or changed something in our lives.

But relationships have a funny way of showing us ourselves too.

You might notice how quickly you abandon your own needs to keep the peace.

How hard it is to say no. What makes you shut down or pull away. What you tolerate. What you expect from love. The same argument you somehow keep having in completely different relationships.

Some of those things were there long before this person came along.

The relationship just brought them close enough to see.

What did this relationship reveal?

Think about someone who has had a significant impact on your life - a partner, friend, parent, sibling, colleague, teacher, or even someone who was only in your life for a short time.

Maybe they challenged you, inspired you, hurt you, believed in you, changed you, or showed you something you hadn’t seen in yourself before.

Now shift the focus from what they did to what the relationship showed you.

What did this relationship reveal about me?

You might notice...

One relationship shows you where your boundaries need strengthening.

Another shows you how much you've grown.

Someone else's kindness makes you realise how harshly you've been speaking to yourself.

A difficult friendship shows you how often you try to keep the peace.

A supportive colleague shows you what it feels like to be genuinely encouraged.

Try this

Think about three people who have shaped your life.

They don't need to be your favourite people, just people who changed something in you.

Write down their names and ask yourself:

What did this relationship teach me?

What did it reveal about me?

What did I take with me?

What did I choose to leave behind?
